Basic French Toast

A Marble Crumbs original recipe: our take on the classic French toast

I was actually not a huge fan of French toast growing up. It was something I easily said no to during sleepovers and Sunday brunch.

I was more of a pancake and waffle girl, but now I feel like I’ve refined my French-toast-cooking-style and enjoy it a lot more. I’ll have sudden cravings for it during the weekend and my husband definitely appreciates my homemade version.

As a matter of fact, it’s really fun to get creative with French toast. Not only can you go all out with the toppings (much like pancakes, crepes, and waffles), but you can also have fun with the egg mixture you dip your bread into.

Here’s my original recipe for a basic French toast:

Marble Crumbs’ Basic French Toast

2 large eggs

3/4 cup milk

3-4 tsps brown sugar

1 tbsp cinnamon

4-5 pieces of bread

Powdered sugar to sprinkle (optional)

Start by whisking eggs and milk together. Once thoroughly combined, add sugar and cinnamon and whisk.

Coat a non-stick pan with a teaspoon of butter and let it sit on medium heat. Once the pan is ready, coat both sides of your bread in the egg mixture and fry about a minute on each side.

The cinnamon will have the tendency to clump up to the top of your egg mixture – but don’t worry about that. Keep on whisking between breads and the egg to avoid an overload of cinnamon on one single serving.

Serve with a sprinkling of powdered sugar. I always love adding jam on top (I used raspberry jam for these photographs and it was lovely!)

Yields about 4 to 6 toasts
